Why Join a Mail Club?
Here in New Zealand snail mail is declining. In 2005 kiwis were sending over a billion items in the post, and now it is around 220 million. I don’t know about you, but my mail now usually consists of mortgage statements, rates, bills and marketing. Checking the mail has gone from a treat to a chore!
Me along with other creatives and artists around the world are looking to change that through mail clubs. In a chronically online yet still disconnected society being part of a mail club is a chance to slow down and feel a meaningful connection.
Here are five reasons I think you should join my postcard subscription and be part of the ‘Postcards from the End of the Earth” mail club:
1. I am small scale – I paint the art, I research and write the letters, I hand sign the letters, and hand-pack the envelopes and hand write your address. If you want to feel connected, I am here every step of the way and so grateful for everyone along for the ride with me!
2. You have an excuse to slow down – In a world of instant gratification and overnight shipping, my mail club goes against this. I will spend hours (days, weeks) preparing the letter, and then once its off in the post, depending on where you live it may take weeks to get to you. The true meaning of snail mail! You get a chance to feel excited and surprised about what is inside. When it arrives, switch off, make a hot drink, get cozy and take some time just for you to read the letter and enjoy the artwork.
3. My unique experiences – in my marine biology career I have woken up at 3am to save turtle nests from erosion, sheltered from storms in the sub-Antarctic alongside a whale and her calf, spent weeks halfway between Australia and NZ with no landmarks or other boats in sight, all giving me inspiration for my wildlife art and conservation stories, that I can share with you!
4. I will literally do a happy dance when you order. I love giving you moments of joy, but by supporting small artist you are giving that joy back and help us keep going.
5. It’s analogue and perfectly imperfect – i.e not airbrushed or AI, but human and real.
